How to Treat Acne and Pimples by Ayurveda

The ancient science, Ayurveda provides many natural and holistic ways to combat skin concerns and to maintain healthy skin. Ayurvedic methods go beyond conventional approaches. It helps find the root cause for the ailment rather than a tropical treatment.

Acne-What does it mean?

Acne is a skin condition wherein the production of sebum from the sebaceous glands blocks the pores. Acne mainly affects the facial skin, back, and other areas where sebaceous glands are higher. Acne is found either as whiteheads, blackheads, nodules, and pimples, and Ayurveda provides practical solutions to acne and skin problems.

How is Acne caused?

According to Ayurveda, each human is made of a unique balance of five elements or the Pancha Bhootas, earth, water, fire, air, and space. And these elements are always in a unique balance. Ayurveda also says about three different doshas, the Vata, Pitta, and Kapha, which too are in a unique balance. An imbalance of these doshas results in health issues. Ayurveda depicts the primary cause of acne as an impairment of Agni which imbalances the three doshas, mainly the Pitta dosha. The aggravated Pitta dosha impairs blood and fat tissues resulting in the production of toxins that block the pores, which leads to acne. The intensity depends on the skin type, diet, lifestyle, and stress levels.

Treatment for Acne

According to Ayurveda, one must treat the root cause of the disease, and in the case of Acne, a Pitta pacifying diet is recommended. People with frequent acne outbreaks must avoid spicy, oily, fermented, and sour foods. To balance Pitta you can indulge in sweet, astringent, and bitter foods. Eating less salty, sour, and pungent tastes can also help avoid Pitta. Spices like cumin, turmeric, coriander, fennel, cinnamon, and cardamom in small quantities help pacify Pitta.

Some lifestyle changes that you can incorporate are

  • Drink at least 8-10 glasses of water a day
  • Use of herbs and spices like fennel, Indian gooseberry, black grapes, and aloe vera.
  • Avoid carbonated drinks
  • Limit the intake of caffeine
  • Wash your face at least twice a day with cool water or a mild cleanser like Shesha Ayurveda’s Tejaswini Face Wash Powder.
